Arizona SB1083 allows for militia formation to protect Arizona’s border with Mexico.
Sound like a great idea? Maybe so, but local watchdogs aren’t quite sold on the militia idea. Many questions have been raised, including the fact that Arizona’s ‘unorganized’ militia could end up being controlled by the State. The ‘unorganized’ militia is supposed to consist of members of the militia, not members of the national guard or state guard when organized. Some of the other questions raised are:
- What are the Qualifications/Eliminations for being a State Guardsmen?
- Who/What makes the Selection?
- Compensation if any?
- Police Powers?
- Immunities/Liabilities/Accountability?
- Command Structure?
- Jurisdiction?
- Can the State Guard be sent out of State?
- Who/What Commands?
- Can an Individual Leave once in?… When/How?
- Who/What watches the Watchers?
Any attempt to place the ‘people’ under the control of government is a bad idea.

Yeah, those are my thoughts too. On the surface, it seems like a good and much needed plan. But once you start digging, all these questions come up. But I agree that AZ needs to do something about its border. And I fully support their right to do so.
